AFFECTED BODY SYSTEMS
The disease Multiple Sclerosis affects the Central Nervous System. The Central Nervous System is the compound of nerve tissues which controls the actions of the body. In vertebrates it contains the brain and spinal cord. When a person has Multiple Sclerosis the Central Nervous System attacks the body causing the breakdown of the Myelin sheath which surrounds certain types of nerve fibers. The Myelin Sheath is made up of protein and fatty substances that created a ‘shield’ around the nerves. When the Myelin Sheath is damaged the impulses which are carried by these nerves become non-functional. This damage is in the spinal column and the brain.
Several things may happen when the Myelin is damaged such as –
- Patches of inflammation may occur in the myelin which surrounds the axons in the brain and other parts of the nervous system.
- And demyelination which is when the myelin deteriorates.
