WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
Multiple Sclerosis, also known as MS for short is a disease which as of yet has no cure.
Multiple Sclerosis attacks the Central Nervous System in the body which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The immune system attacks the Myelin Sheath. Myelin Sheath is a protecting layer which surrounds the nerves. The Myelin Sheath is made of protein and fatty elements which surround the nerve fibers, which allow the impulses in the body to transmit efficiently and rapidly along the nerve cells. If the Myelin Sheath is ever damaged the impulses will slow down which causes the disease Multiple Sclerosis.
Multiple Sclerosis is mainly diagnosed to people between the ages 20 and 50. However
there have been cases where children and the elderly have been diagnosed.
In Australia an estimated amount of 18 000 people have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis
